For Our Visitors-What to Expect

1. Friendliness: When you visit us, you can expect to find friendly people who are genuinely concerned about you. YOU WILL BE OUR HONORED GUEST! God does not show partiality to men (Acts 10:34-35). Likewise Christians assembling a the church of Christ in Oakman, AL do not show partiality toward men. (cf. Rom 12:9-16; James 21-13).

2. Order: Paul commands that all things in the church be done decently and in order (1 Cor 14:40).  During our worship services, you will see that we have a preset order which has been determined in accordance with God's word. One man will make announcements, another one or more will lead singing, others will lead prayers, and some others will serve the Lord's Supper and take up the collection. During our Bible classes, you will see the class courteously conducted in a edifying manner. We search the Scriptures diligently to rightly divide God's word.

3. A Church of Christ: The word "church" means a called out body. Christians are people who respond to God's gospel call (II Thess 2:4). When you visit with us, you will see that we teach and do the things which are authorized in God's word. Scripture is our only guide (II Tim 3_15-17). We neither add to God's word nor take away from God's word (Rev 22:18-19).

4. A Church Obeying Jesus: What would you expect when visiting a faithful church of Christ? Bible study on the church of Christ. If you wish we will show you God's commands in the Bible and help you obey that very hour of the day. And you can be like the Ethiopian eunuch who was baptized and went on his way rejoicing (Acts 8:38-39).

Modern Day Good Samaritans

Luke 10:25-37 Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan is the ultimate illustration of “love your neighbor as yourself”, the second greatest commandment of all. (Mark 12:31) We like to think of ourselves as modern day good Samaritans, who are willing to reach out to neighbors who are in need. Jesus tells of a traveler who was robbed, stripped, beaten and left half dead. Two religious men came by but refused to help. Along comes a Samaritan who stops to offer aid. From this point, have we ever looked closely at what the Samaritan man did for the stranger, considering the risks and sacrifices that he made?

• “When he saw him, he had compassion.” The Samaritan was moved to action by this powerful emotion. We often feel compassion for the less fortunate, but does it compel us to stop whatever we’re doing or wherever we’re going and do something about it?

 • “He went to him and bandaged his wounds.” This was a risky situation. It could have been a trap. Would we stop in a bad part of town, leaving ourselves vulnerable to attack? Would we render aid to a naked and bleeding man lying in the street?

• “Pouring on oil and wine.” This may have been the traveler’s only supplies. If he was a merchant, he would be losing income. If the injured was dirty, bloody, or smelled bad, would we offer to touch him and soil our own clothes to help him?

 • “He set him on his own animal.” Would we place this dirty, naked, and bloody person in our nice car that we spent $100 to have cleaned and detailed?

 • “He brought him to an inn and took care of him.” Would we take him to the nearest hospital ER and sit with him until he was treated? What if we had an important appointment or social engagement?

• “He took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper.” The denarii was a day’s wage. The average America wage is $270. Would we spend over $500 for a two night stay at a hotel for a stranger?

• “Whatever more you spend, I will repay you.” What if the injured stranger needs to stay in the hotel a month to recover? The average cost for a budget hotel is $100 per night. Would we be willing to pay over $3,000 to cover the expenses?

You may say that this is all impractical but it’s exactly what the Good Samaritan did. If we want to be modern day Samaritans then we must heed the words of Jesus when He said, “Go and do likewise.
