For Our Visitors-What to Expect

1. Friendliness: When you visit us, you can expect to find friendly people who are genuinely concerned about you. YOU WILL BE OUR HONORED GUEST! God does not show partiality to men (Acts 10:34-35). Likewise Christians assembling a the church of Christ in Oakman, AL do not show partiality toward men. (cf. Rom 12:9-16; James 21-13).

2. Order: Paul commands that all things in the church be done decently and in order (1 Cor 14:40).  During our worship services, you will see that we have a preset order which has been determined in accordance with God's word. One man will make announcements, another one or more will lead singing, others will lead prayers, and some others will serve the Lord's Supper and take up the collection. During our Bible classes, you will see the class courteously conducted in a edifying manner. We search the Scriptures diligently to rightly divide God's word.

3. A Church of Christ: The word "church" means a called out body. Christians are people who respond to God's gospel call (II Thess 2:4). When you visit with us, you will see that we teach and do the things which are authorized in God's word. Scripture is our only guide (II Tim 3_15-17). We neither add to God's word nor take away from God's word (Rev 22:18-19).

4. A Church Obeying Jesus: What would you expect when visiting a faithful church of Christ? Bible study on the church of Christ. If you wish we will show you God's commands in the Bible and help you obey that very hour of the day. And you can be like the Ethiopian eunuch who was baptized and went on his way rejoicing (Acts 8:38-39).

Just My Thoughts

February 16, 2026

They Cast Lots

IN (Ps 22:18), the Psalmist writes; “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” This seemingly insignificant statement is anything but insignificant. In fact it is a prophecy written 10 centuries before Jesus was born. A “messianic” prophecy which proves the inspiration of the Bible.

All four gospel authors (Matt-Mk-Lk-Jn) write about this incident which occurred at the crucifixion of Jesus. These unnamed Roman soldiers who “just happened” to be assigned crucifixion duty that day, and “just happened” to have charge of the condemned Jesus of Nazareth. Who “happened” that to be wearing a seamless tunic. Were operating solely out of their own selfish desires and impulses. They were oblivious to the fact that they were fulfilling a prophecy from 10 centuries earlier, penned by King David-King of Israel.

The Psalm says they divided Jesus’ garments (which they did), and then “cast lots”. Why? If they were able to agree on who got what, why cast lots? A good question with an extremely interesting answer. John informs us that the tunic was on one piece, “seamless”. So instead of tearing it into four pieces, they gambled over who would get it. And this is significant why? Well in 1500 BC God gave the law of Moses to the Israelites. These were the covenant requirements that would guide Israel through it’s national existence. The law included provisions for the high priest (Aaron being the first)(Ex 28). On the day of atonement (Yom Kippur), the high priest alone entered the Holy of Holies for the one and only time of the year. He did so to make atonement first for himself and his family and then for all of Israel. (Lev 16).

In (Heb 3:1, 4:14, 9:1), the Hebrews writer portrays Jesus as our “high priest”. Jesus uniquely performs for Christians the parallel function of the high priest that ABSOLUTELY MUST be performed if we are permitted to be saved and live eternally with God. Among the clothing worn by the high priest alone (as stipulated by God), was the “tunic of fine linen thread” (Ex 28:39). According to the first century historian Josephus this tunic was seamless; “Now this vesture was no composed of two pieces. Nor was it sewed together upon the shoulder and the sides. But it was a long vestment so woven as to have an aperture for the neck. Not an oblique one. But parted all along the breast and back”.

So, is this coincidence? Maybe. But I highly doubt it. John went out of his way to make the point about this tunic. And the Roman soldiers gambled for this seamless tunic of the Messiah. A tunic the subtly signaled His redemptive role as the one to make atonement for the world in the very act of dying on the cross. Jesus was and is our high priest. Making intercession for us everyday before God. And I for one am extremely grateful he does.
